I saw this piece in the Art21 series, episode called memory. It is a collection of reflective objects placed in a reflective box. The viewer sees into the box via a two-way mirror. I think what has always attracted me about artists is that they are all so different from each other compared to other cultures such as politics, or sciences. Great art simply offers a new way of thinking. A new reflection of life.

From "Everything Is Illuminated"

by Johnathan Safran Foer

"God loves the plagiarist. And so it is written,"God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them." God is the original plagiarizer. With a lack of reasonable sources from which to filch- man created in the image of what? the animals?- the creation of man was an act of reflexive plagiarizing. God looted the mirror. When we plagiarize, we are likewise creating in the image and participating in the completion of Creation."

down and up

One moment your down
everything feels damp
dusty and
smells like the sink drain
your wife hates your guts
the washing machine breaks and
you need to buy a new one
a strange man keeps eyeing you
while your riding to work
on a saturday morning!

Then suddenly everything changes
you stop feeling sorry for yourself
your wife texts you to apologize
your students have smiles
on their faces
you eat a ham and butter sandwhich
on that french bread
the kind with the powdery crust

the dust has settled
and now your in limbo
waiting for the next wave

ART 21

art 21 at PBS. 5 seasons of episodes on art in the twenty first century. I just watched episode 2 which covers the concept of spirituality. The first artist is Ann Hamilton who uses all kinds of mediums such as video, textiles, and photography. The most inspiring was that she made pin-hole cameras, which she places in her mouth. And then by opening her mouth onto her subject the film is exposed to light. Another highlight is a feature on James Turrell, who if you don't know is quite famous for his work with light. He has been working on a project called the Roden Crader for almost 40 years. It sits in the middle of the dessert and is designed as place to view celestial events, such as stars, the moon, and the sky.

I get jabbed in the side as I sit down. I look towards him and he stares at his paper with a cocky face. It could be just my imagination. I just ignore it and read my magazine. A few stops later he gets off. Another man sits down and holds his hands in prayer. His throat vibrates a slight white noise like a guitar being plugged into a live amp. He's muttering something but barely audible. I get up as my station is called on on the intercom. I glance over at his ritual until the train slows and the doors open.

Lady Gaga

I feel like so much of the American culture of my generation has been devoted to "the underground". I feel I amongst many others have developed the allusion that the depth of a work's artistic vision is measured by its relative distance from mainstream culture. I do believe distancing one's creative process from the mainstream to be beneficial as it distances your creativity from business and the idea that your creations must be marketable. However, on the other hand feel I that this "underground complex" also diminishes the possibility of there being actual artistic beauty in the mainstream.

I have only heard Lady Gaga's music in passing; listening for only a few seconds before tossing her in the bin with the rest of the pop trash. The other day Lady Gaga made this appearance on a Japanese morning news show and was rather impressed. For perspective, I recommend listening to the original version of the song as well.

Required Reading

I can't express how amazing this book is. You must read it for yourself if you have a chance. Bill Bryson is a well-known travel writer who decided to read a gazillion science books from astronomy to biology and publish the wonders in an everyperson's way of understanding. He keeps it impacting from beginning to end with humorous stories of crazed scientists (like Newton who stuck a needle in his eye to see what would happen) to the amazing facts (that if the length of your stretched-out arms represented the time of the earth, you could scrape away human history with a nail file). Another interseting point of his writing is his skepticism. Throughout the book he makes light of the limitations of science. All though we have come so far, there is still so much more to learn. And lastly the sense of scale he puts forth is quite humbling. From his point of view, the world of the small (microbes and viruses) rule over us. They have been around much longer and will probably continue to remain after we pass on. And to the opposite effect, our Universe is incredibly massive. We have a long way to go if we want to find another world like ours. All of this is fascinating stuff, so if you're into this sort of thing, check it out.

Geometric Structures with Moving Parts

First up is Reuben Margolin featured on Walrus TV. This guy makes amazing objects based on wave forms. Towards the end he says that "if you just copy the tiniest part of nature you will have a beautiful work of art. It doesn't take much." Well said.

Next is an animation of a proposed moving skyscraper for Dubai. I love the epic music. They're definitely trying to make a sale with this one.

And last is this really interesting idea, which reminds me of Gordon Matta Clark's work, but taken to a new level by involving movement. It was created by Richard Wilson. Its called "Turning the Place Over"

RAMM:ELL:ZEE

One of the true artists of our times.
At Gothic Futurism, you can see his paintings, his letter racers, and his superheroes and villains. His whole style is based on Gothic Futurism and Ikonklast Panzerism. The meanings behind both are somewhat elusive, but definitely thought provoking and unique to all of hip-hop culture. He's also MCed for The Death Comet Crew and appeared in the cult classic Style Wars performing "Beat Bop". Super sick.

HIP-HOP vs. GUINEA PIG

For some reason, during my recent experience as a guinea pig (locked in a room for 24 hours), I found myself with a ferocious craving for Hip-Hop. Luckily my cell was furnished with a computer and thanks to Youtube I could satisfy my audio appetite.

Here are some of the nostalgic highlights of my 24 hours:

String Theory

Last year there was a lot of controversy surrounding the launch of The LHC(Large Hadron Collider) at CERN Labs, near the Franco-Swiss border. This collider was made to smash atoms at very high energies (There are other smashers in the world, but much weaker compared to the LHC). Some people were worried it would create a black hole. Unfortunately, the LHC has had some problems launching. Reports say they will try again this summer.
In this documentary called The Elegant Universe, which is based on a book of the same name, provides some insight as to why this Atom smasher was built in the first place. Everyone knows that the world is composed of atoms, which are composed of neutrons, protons, and electrons. However these are not the only ones. There are others, which are much tinier. These particles are so tiny that in order to detect them, physicists must smash atoms at very high energies. Presently, some physicists theorize that the world is composed of tiny strings which give rise to particles such as electrons, quarks, and so on. This theory cannot be proved real until physicists detect important clues. Thus the LHC, which will smash atoms at much higher energies than ever before, could in fact lead to a new scientific revolution. On the other hand, its a little worrying that in order to make bigger discoveries physicists much use such high energies. Where is the line they draw before entering dangerous levels.

Watch Brian Greene's Elegant Universe over at PBS, its an extremely insightful and very well done science video.

Mag Cloud

If you want to make one copy of a magazine at 20 cents a page on good paper, check out this service. All you have to do is send them a pdf and they will send you your magazine a few days later. Once you've made it, you can sell it on their site. This is a pretty big deal considering you don't have to make 1000 copies. For unkown types or kids that just want to share their work with their friends, its amazing. However, the service is only available in the states at the moment.
