"Not to have a particular style is to have authorship and to be an author of expression."
Seu Jorge is a Brazilian singer/songwriter and actor from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
i have been familiar and a fan of his music for quite sometime now, but was completely unaware of his endeavors in acting. Last night, in a haze of insomnia, i watched the movie City of God.
"Once in the favela, you have no rights."
"...today in the favelas of Brazil, there is a growing youth movement. This is the incentive of the favela because people cannot stand to kill anymore, because they don’t have anything to eat. They want to try a new life.”
Knowing nothing of Jorge's acting i was completely taking back at finding his name in the ending credits. His character Lil' Dice/Lil' Ze depicts perhaps the exact opposite of the image i feel his music portrays; an image of serene sensitivity and love for life.
i highly recommend checking out his music and City of God, both of which are extremely powerful in their own right.
